GANESH CHATURTHI

The Legend :
Demon called Gajasura had once performed
penance for Lord Shiva and had obtained the boon of becoming the abode of Lord Shiva. But,
the world being orphaned after this, Gods have made a plot with the help of Lord Vishnu to
retrieve Lord Shiva from his stomach and they succeeded.
As the news has reached Kailash,
Goddess Parvati decides to take a head bath and makes the structure of a boy and breathes
life into it, taking him for her son. She has then ordered the kid to keep a watch at the
door and not allow anyone until she asks him to do so. Abide by his mothers words,
the kid restricts the entry of Lord Shiva too and ultimately falls prey to his anger.
Goddess Parvathi, having had her heart
broken with the incident urges Lord Shiva to bring her son back to life. And Lord Shiva
does so by adding Gajasuras face to him, giving him the current form. It is this day
that is celebrated as Ganesh Chaturthi today.
Another legend associated with the festival
is that people fall prey to Neelapanindalu (blamed for faults of others) if they
happen to see the Moon without having worn the Katha akshatas of Vinayaka Vratam.
The reason behind this is said to be the fact that Moon had played a mock at
Vinayakas gait with his bulged belly after he has had his favourite Undrallu on
this day. Legend also has it that Lord Krishna had once fell prey to this Neelapanindalu
for having seen the moon in the milk pot without performing the Vratam.
