Haj & Ka`ba (Mecca) :
Come Bakrid comes the time for thousands of Muslim pilgrims to throng at Mecca. Bakrid
actually marks the culmination of the Haj, the pilgrimage to Ka`ba in Mecca.
Ka`ba from times immemorial has been an
important place of worship even before the advent of Islam and revelation of the Holy
Quran to Prophet Muhammad and its significance has been growing ever since.
This day coinciding with the anniversary of
the day when the Quran was declared complete, further adds to the sanctity. It is also
believed that Prophet Mohammed have preached Id to be celebrated for 3 days to ensure that
the entire community participates.
Thus, for the millions at Haj in Saudi Arabia, it indeed is a big
day. On the day of Id, the pilgrims reach the grounds of Mina where Ibrahim once was
believed to have attempted to sacrifice his son. They sacrifice an animal each here and
then shave their heads. The regular namaz of course forms a part of the day. The idea here
is to be together with the millions of devotees who converge to Mecca each year for the
Haj.
