UGADI
Ugadi Pacchadi :
Spring being the time for fresh crop, Ugadi
Pacchadi is made of new jaggery, raw mango pieces, new tamarind and the neem flowers
a combination of sweet, sour and bitter tastes indeed!
Ingredients:
2 tsp new
jaggery pieces
1 1/2 tsp new tamarind
1 1/2 tsp chopped raw mango
1 tsp neem flowers.
1 cup water
Method:
Soak Tamarind for about 15-20 minutes in a
cup of water. Extract tamarind juice by squeezing the pulp and straining the juice from
it. Dissolve the new jaggery pieces in it. Then add the chopped raw mango and the neem
flowers. Mix well and Vepaputa Pacchadi or Ugadi pacchadi as it is well
known is ready!
This pot pourri of all tastes is considered
symbolic of the multifaceted aspects like difficulties, pleasures, anger, love, hatred and
so on in the different walks of life. It is also believed its consumption would keep away
ill health and bad luck for an entire year.
