SRISAILAM
- MALLIKARJUNA SWAMI |
About the Temple
:
Sri Sailam is one of the Jyothirlingas of Lord Shiva, situated on the banks of
River Krishna in the Nallamalai forest. The presiding deities here are Mallikarjuna and
Bhramaramba. Alampur, Siddhavattam, Tripurantakam and Umamaheswaram are said to be
the western, southern, eastern and northern gateways of Srisailam. This is one of the
three famous linga kshetrams, the other being Draksharama and Kaleswara.
The main temple of Mallikarjuna swamy is said to be resting on the tail of
the recumbent serpent Adisheshu. It is also known as "Sri Mallikarjunam"
or "Sri Parvatham". At Srisailam Patalaganga, the river Krishna, taking
two consecutive bends within a short distance walled by a large stretch of plateau at each
bend presents an aesthetic scene. While on the right side is seen the temple of Srisailam,
on the other is seen the so-called ruined Chandraguptanagar. Tribals called
"Chenchus" are said to be inhabiting the thick forest of the hill and the areas
of their residence are called the "Pentas".
