CROCHET LACE
Crochet lace is a kind of needlework introduced in the
mid-nineteenth century as a way of self-employment to the poor. It is said to be
introduced by Mr and Mrs Macrau from Scotland in 19th century at Narsapur and thus famous
as Narsapur Lace.
The making of Crochet lace includes
the weaving of the lace using a simple hooked needle and a cotton thread. The thread used
generally is twisted mercerised cotton yarn made out of superior grade cotton.
The craft that has emerged from the local skills with merely a few designs, now has a wide
variety with over 300 designs of the highly artistic artisans. Articles produced not only
include the whole lace works but also the clothes with lace as decorative insertions.
The craft is practiced as a part-time occupation at
home in Narsapur and Palakollu areas of West Godavari District and Rajolu Taluk of East
Godavari District. Artistic luncheon sets, round & oblong table covers, bed covers and
door curtains, nighties and gowns are some items that have been an invaluable gift to be
sent to friends and relatives abroad. |
