DOKRA
Dokra is a metal craft that is tribal in origin
with lingering freshness and originality in thoughts. In the state this craft is found in Chittalbori
and Ushegaon in Adilabad District. Apart from Andhra Pradesh the craft is prevalent in
the states of Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Bengal and Andhra Pradesh.
To make a Dokra
article, the shape of the article in first molded in a mixture of red mud and wax. Then
finally, the molten Brass is poured over the created structure. Dokra works thus being
made of brass scrap have a core of clay preserved within the metal.
Dokra works are known for their uniqueness and the individualistic touch in creation. The
subjects for the art are mostly drawn from nature and usually take the form of wild
animals and fish apart from the bells, anklets and trinkets. Figurines, horses, drummers,
peculiar shaped spoons and hauntingly original tribal Gods are commonly seen in Dokra.
The dexterous art works
depicting the wild animals are rather thought provoking. A typical example is the
depiction of deer with its head sharply arched towards the sky as if calling out to
heavens for help. The art is right now available in all the Handicraft emporiums in the
form of showcase pieces, paperweights and gift items. |
