CLARINET

Clarinet is a wind instrument of European origin. The instrument found suitable for playing carnatic music too, was first practiced and introduced into the South Indian dance band by Mahadeva Nattuvanar in the 19th century.

Clarinet looks similar to the Nadaswaram. A single reed shaped to fit between the lips of the player is affixed on the mouthpiece. The pipe consists of a cylindrical tube in three sections and has a number of holes that can be operated by the keys provided with on its side.

The length of the air column inside the instrument are thus altered with the help of these keys to produce different notes. The player thus produces different notes by adjusting the column of air and the pressure of the air blown in. the lowest note is played when all the finger holes are kept covered.
