GHATAM
Ghatam is a mud pot and has been a
percussion instrument from ancient times. A pot is made of clay and is then fired to
harden it to prepare the Ghatam.
Ghatam is played with the wrists, fingers and the fingernails by holding its mouth against
the stomach of the player. This produces a deep tone as the air inside the pot is set to
vibration and the tones vary with the place of the finger strokes on the Ghatam. Ghatam
thus is not kept in the same position while playing unlike the other percussion
instruments. It is even thrown up in the air and then caught without missing the relevant
beat.
