MRIDANGAM

Mridangam is an indispensable percussion instrument in any musical concert in Andhra Pradesh as is Tambura for sruthi. Mridangam – literally means a clay body. This was because it was made of clay in earlier days.

The body of Mridangam is made up of Jack wood, Red wood or Margosa wood in general. The body of the instrument is generally scooped out from a single block wood. Cured and treated skins are fastened to leather braces and are stretched over the two heads of the Mridangam. This along with other percussion instruments form a perfect accompaniment for the classical music
