Ramdas Keertanas :
Ramdas Keertanas though not many, are known
for being radiantly vibrant and deeply moving because of the smooth flow of lines echoing
with divine fervor. His Bhagadanubhavam poured out of his heart in the form of many
Krithis and Divyanamas. They are mostly in Telugu with the exception of
two in Sanskrit. Among his worthy compositions is the "Dasarathee Satakam"
with "Dasarathee karuna payonidhi", which is one of the best compositions. The
other note worthy Keertanas sung in various instances include -
About Bhadrachalam :
Idigo Bhadradri Gowthami adigo chudandi
About Rama and his sacred name :
Oh Rama nee namamentho ruchira...
Takkuvemi manaku ramundokkadundu varaku
Taraka Mantramu korina dorakenu
To invoke Rama to come to his rescue :
Pahi Rama Prabho
Pahi Rama Prabho
Paluke bangaramayena
kodandapani
Sitaramaswamy ne chesina nerambemi
Ye
theeruga nanu daya chusedavo
Accusing Rama in distress :
Ikshvaku kula tilaka ikanaina brovaro
Requesting Sita Devi to take his stand
to convince the Lord :
Nanu
brovamani cheppave sitamma talli
Ramachandrulu napai chalamu chesinaru
And the list goes on
Unfortunately,
Ramdas' keertanas have not received serious attention and few music/ classical dance
scholars include these in their repertoires of music and dance.
Tondaiman rulers of Pudukkotai in Tamil
Nadu can be said to have given great impetus to the popularisation of the Ramadas
keertanas. The songs were once strongly favoured by the minstrels (travelling singers) who
included them in their folk performances.
But today, efforts are on to propagate
Bhakta Ramadas' keertanas. Mr Balamurali Krishna is one on his way propagating the musical
legacy. Another such exponent is the "Brindavani" institute, started by the
Bombay sisters.
