Ramzan. The legendary lad bazaar was founded by Ladli Begum, the wife
of Mir Mehboob Ali, the sixth Nizam of Hyderabad. This bazaar emerges from the
historic landmark, the Charminar. It has
existed for centuries and continues to exist
as it always has. The entire street jostles with carts of colourful lac bangles. These bangles studded with stones and glass glitter
in the daylight and allure many a women into purchasing them. The shops are full of bright
and glittering gold accessories. The common sights of Lad Bazaar are of the dye
merchants, who create colourful peaks with their coloured powders. One can also find lacquer workers actively engaged in
practicing their craft, the rhythms of the silver smiths beating silver into artistic
shapes. All this makes the entire market throb with excitement.
During the time of Ramzan or the wedding season, this bazaar is heavily crowded with
burkha clad Muslim woman, fashion conscious young college girls and lambadins bedecked in
traditional Jewelry. The surrounding areas of this bazaar have Chakrami and Mitti-Ka-Sher,
which are famous for antique jewellery in kundan and enamel. Nearby, there is a place
called Darushafa, which is well known for the tissue thin silver leafy sheets, used to
decorate sweets and bidriware. The appliqued, heavily
sequined skirts, bags and belts set with sparkling mirrors and tiny beads of Banjara
gypsies is yet another attraction here.
The bazaar is at its festive best at night, when the area
surrounding Charminar is well lit and full of bustle.
A walk through this bazaar can definitely be an exciting experience, with wafting
perfumes and echoes of vendors selling different articles on the streets. This activity starts with the dawn,
picks up with the dusk and goes on uninterrupted till the late hours. |
