It is well known throughout the world for its prized collections belonging to different
civilizations, dating back to the first century. It
contains 47,000 exhibits from all corners of the world and includes sculptures, wood
carvings, religious objects, Persian miniature paintings, illuminated manuscripts,
armor, weaponry and over 50,000 books. All this is housed in 36 rooms. Some of the most famed exhibits are the
veiled Rebecca, Mestophiles and the Lady with the
lamp. In the jade room one can see the swords, daggers and the clothing of the
Mughal emperors and of Tipu Sultan. A
childrens section contains toys, puppets and model trains. The clock room is one of the best galleries with a
collection of more than 300 clocks, ranging from sandclock to modern day huge pieces. The chief exhibits include the tiny pieces set
under magnifying glasses to huge and stately grandfather clocks from France, England,

a toy figure of watchman, who pushes open the door every hour in a great hurry, to beat
the melodious gong. |
